Saroja Devi சரோஜ தே வ , also known as Sarojini Naidu (; 13 February 1879 – 2 March 1949), was a child prodigy from Hyderabad. She had an extraordinary memory and would recite long passages of poetry without error even as a child of five. In 1887 she became the youngest Indian candidate ever to pass an examination in English from University College London. She went on to become one of the first female graduates from Madras University and a campaigner for female empowerment. Her literary works were an essential part of the independence movement. Sarojini Naidu was one of the most prominent women leaders of the Indian National Congress and an important member of the Indian freedom struggle. She was one of the first woman graduates in India, and later became principal of Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Lucknow, an institute for higher education for women in India. She also served as president of the All India Women's Conference which took a leading part in securing legislation on child marriage. She was nominated to the Constituent Assembly that drafted India's constitution by the Congress led statesman, Jawaharlal Nehru, who described her as 'a symbol of courage and rebellion'. She was born to a Telugu Brahmin family in Hyderabad. She was the eldest of nine children and started her education at home where she received tuition from her mother and sister. Her father died while she was still young and she grew up under the tutelage of her mother and other women in the family. Her uncle, the poet and scholar Pingali Venkayya, encouraged her to develop her literary skills. She started writing poetry at the age of seven and was first published at the age of thirteen. She also compiled an anthology of poems in Telugu "Prajatantramu", which was published by Hyderabad State. Her name became well known when she won a prize for elocution at an all-India competition held by the Madras University in 1888. The prize consisted of books presented to her by Queen Victoria. In 1892 she went on to win another prize from the university for a poem written on "Bird as Prophet". She had become a household name and went on to become the Indian participant at the international public speaking competitions in Europe. In 1893 she was awarded a gold medal for elocution at the University of Calcutta. She remained uneducated until she started attending school in 1895. She was an accomplished musician and performed on violin, santoor and piano. She was also proficient with writing simple mathematics, poetry and essay-writing.
